Why do cats open their mouths after smelling smelly feet

Cats will often open their mouths and give a frightened expression when they smell smelly feet. But they are not about to vomit; instead, they are turning up their upper lip to allow the smell to enter the front of their nasal organs in order to perceive it more closely, a behaviour called the ‘split-lip sniffing response’.
