Stones in dogs can be classified as gall bladder stones, kidney stones, bladder stones and urethral stones, and usually the stones will be painful. Bladder stones and urethral stones are more common and can cause painful urination, dripping urine, urethritis and, in severe cases, urinary closure. Current treatments for stones include medication to dissolve them and surgery to remove them. Dogs with urinary blockage usually require surgery, while medication can be tried to dissolve them when symptoms are mild.
