The distinction between male and female kittens is usually based on the external genitalia, which are located about 1cm below the anus and are the same for both male and female kittens. A small fissure can be seen below the anus of a small female cat. Small male cats can be seen as a small, round, punctate opening. Adults are better distinguished.
