The main sources of infection for feline distemper are faeces, urine, saliva and vomit from the acutely infected cats, so there are three main ways of transmission: direct contact with acutely infected cats, contact with cats that have recovered from distemper or are still detoxifying, and infection through contaminated environments. The most common cause is environmental infection, such as cats staying in places where diseased or virulent cats have stayed and coming into contact with the virus.
