Today I want to talk about a misconception in raising cats, some pooper scoopers especially like to tease cats when they are just full, using a variety of small toys to make cats jump up and down in the house, they think that giving cats exercise after meals will help their health and will not make cats become obese. But such a practice is actually very dangerous! In one case, a netizen always teased her cat after eating, in fact, she was particularly reluctant, but could not resist the temptation of toys, every time she played, but suddenly one day, after playing with her cat as usual, she suddenly found that her cat began to appear different, her stomach became big, and hurriedly took her to the hospital for examination, it turned out to be a gastric torsion! To operate immediately, but still too late. As a result, the cat was not saved, the network regrets. What is gastric torsion? Gastric torsion in cats is a condition in which the pylorus (the lower position of the stomach) is turned from the right to the left and is squeezed between the liver, the end of the esophagus and the fundus of the stomach, and causes the cardia to become inaccessible (where the stomach meets the esophagus). Gastric torsion is sometimes seen in cats and its onset is sudden, with rapid abdominal distention and abdominal pain as the main symptoms, inability to eat, rapid failure, and sometimes shock and rapid death. Treatment requires surgery. The cause of gastric torsion in cats is unknown. The most commonly known condition is that it is caused by strenuous exercise after eating. 2. It has also been seen in cats after laparotomy with abnormal adhesions to the peritoneum during the recovery period or secondary to a diaphragmatic hernia. 3. Gastric torsion is seen less frequently in kittens, and the main age of the disease is between 8 months and 10 years. Symptoms of gastric torsion 1. The cat suddenly stops eating in the middle of a meal, or is begging for a snack one second, but rapidly loses its appetite and has a rapidly progressive enlargement of the abdomen. 2. Observation will reveal a tense and hardened abdomen and may reveal gas trapping when touched. 3. Rapid respiration and heart rate, abdominal pain, rapid collapse, and occasional vomiting. 4. Sometimes accompanied by signs of shock and rapid death! Diagnosis of gastric torsion 1. When the abdomen of a cat is suddenly enlarged and gas retention is detected by touch, it is very likely that the disease is present. 2. To confirm the diagnosis, lateral and dorsal abdominal radiographs of the thorax and abdomen are used to confirm whether there is gas accumulation inside the stomach causing the enlargement, whether gas retention can be seen in the intestine, and even whether there is a diaphragmatic hernia or ascites retention. 3. The diagnosis can be confirmed by open surgery. Treatment 1. For very critical cats, surgical treatment should be used for salvage treatment. (1) General anesthesia and dissection of the abdominal cavity using a median incision in the upper part of the abdomen. (2) After extracting gas from the stomach, reset the intestinal torsion and cut open or remove the stomach if a tumor or necrotic tissue is found in the stomach. 2. For cats with anesthetic allergy and overly weak constitution, only pharmacological therapy can be used for treatment (1) In cases of obvious failure, cardiac strengthening, elevation and improvement of respiration should be applied with intramuscular injection of bimorphinamide, along with intraoperative intravenous fluid. To combat shock, adrenocorticosteroids are given. (2) Infusion of broad-spectrum antibiotics (amoxicillin) for several days after surgery is given continuously for several days. (3) Fasting for one day after surgery. After the time has passed, the cat should be fed a small amount of milk and juice and gradually resume a normal diet. If there is no sign of improvement, fasting should be continued. Prevention of gastric torsion 1, the most common is caused by the movement of the cat after eating, so the pooper scooper after the cat has eaten half an hour to an hour before going to play with it, so that it can digest properly. 2, to feed regularly and quantitatively, too much hunger caused by overeating can also cause gastric torsion. 3, after the cat has undergone laparotomy, must pay attention to care, follow medical advice, careful of abnormal adhesion of the peritoneum caused by gastric torsion. Note that more exercise is also beneficial to the health of cats, but be sure to pay attention to the appropriate time and cat interaction ah.
