What happens if a dog’s umbilical hernia is left untreated

If a dog has a small umbilical hernia that does not show clinical signs, it generally does not need to be treated and can be rectified by the way if the bitch is being spayed. Larger umbilical hernias need to be treated surgically and require general anaesthetic. In such cases, the dog should be taken to hospital immediately to avoid prolonging the course of the disease and causing adhesions to the hernia contents, thus affecting the function of the corresponding organs.
