What colour is the cat’s world?

The world in a cat’s eyes is black, white and grey in colour. They can also distinguish between the shades of blue, green, purple and yellow. Cats’ eyes do not have optic rod cells that perceive red, so they cannot discriminate between the colours red, orange and brown, and they see black to grey scale. However, cats have superb night vision. On the back of the retina there is a reflective membrane, the fleece layer, which reflects light passing through the rod cells in the opposite direction back into the rod cells, so that cats can see clearly in very low light.
