Ticks that bite dogs are usually soft ticks, which have a reproductive cycle of between 1-4 weeks and there are many different species of soft ticks. If you find a tick on your dog, it is important to treat it promptly. It should not be pulled directly by hand as this will leave the tick’s mouthparts inside the skin. It is advisable to apply alcohol to the tick with a cotton swab, leave it paralysed before pulling it out, and then disinfect the bite with iodine.
