The owner should lift the dog’s tail to expose the anus, place the thumb and forefinger at the two o’clock and eight o’clock positions respectively, squeeze slowly from the inside out, squeeze out the dirt from the anal glands and then wipe the dog’s anal glands clean with a paper towel. After squeezing the anal glands your dog may feel uncomfortable and may experience itching and redness, so you can apply a vulva spray or anal redness cream to your dog’s anus. Normally it is fine to squeeze your dog’s anal glands once every 15-30 days or so, usually when you give your dog a bath. If the dog appears to be sitting on the floor and rubbing its bottom frequently, owners should pay more attention to check for inflammation.
