Dogs are generally sexually mature and capable of reproduction at 6 months of age or older. However, it takes 8-12 months for small to medium sized dogs to reach physical maturity and 12-18 months or longer for some extra large breeds. Dogs are seasonal animals that come into heat once in spring and once in autumn. Mating takes place on the 9th and 11th day after oestrus to increase conception rates.
