Dogs have no emergency contraceptives

The common international emergency contraceptives for dogs are hexestrol and estradiol cypionate, both of which allow dogs to produce large amounts of estrogen in their bodies for a short period of time, preventing a fertilized egg from entering the uterus. However, like human emergency contraceptives, they have very serious side effects, if not more so than ever before. Many organizations have found many after-effects in female dogs after ingesting estrogenic drugs. If the dog is inadvertently mated, then the owner has the option of taking the dog to the hospital for spay/neuter surgery, or waiting for the dog to give birth. If the owner does not have a need to breed the dog, then the dog can be spayed directly, so that the dog will not give birth and the risk of the dog suffering from reproductive disorders is reduced.
