A domesticated, healthy dog that does not go outside will not have rabies. Dogs do not carry rabies virus themselves, rabies is transmitted by contact. If a domestic dog is known to have no conditions for rabies virus infection and has not been out of contact with other animals that may have rabies virus afterwards, then the dog is rabies-free. Rabies is a viral infection caused by rabies virus with a very high mortality rate. When rabies virus infects a wound, it will multiply in the skeletal muscle, nerves, after which the rabies virus will invade the central nervous system along the nerves, and the dog will develop water fear and anorexia, bite for no reason, and convulsions throughout the body.
