Encephalitis in dogs is an inflammation of the meninges and brain parenchyma due to infection or neutrophilic factors. Most septic encephalitis is caused by septic bacteria, trauma to the head, the spread of septic foci in adjacent areas and systemic septicaemia via blood transfer. Parasitic encephalitis can also be caused by the migration of larvae of certain parasites into the brain tissue. Non-suppurative encephalitis is most often seen secondary to infectious diseases, such as distemper and rabies. Bacterial diseases can also cause encephalitis to develop.
