Bichon grunts to express fear, boredom, pain, etc., and need to be discovered by the owner’s own observation. Bichons are often uncomfortable in a new environment and will express fear at night by making grunting noises. Dogs will also grunt when they are bored, trying to get their owner’s attention so they can play with them. Bichons can feel ill when they are infected with a disease and will often express this by grunting. If you have a female Bichon and she is old enough, the grunting may indicate that the dog is in heat. When a dog is in heat, in addition to grunting, there will be swelling and bleeding in the lower body.
