Dogs recognize that the highest status in the family is the owner. Dogs are pack animals and will obey the highest ranking person in the team. Dogs always lick your face means that they recognize you as the boss, which means that they are quite sure of your status in the family. Dogs listen to whoever is the most obedient, will recognize who is the master. When you approach the food, if the dog does not make some drastic behavior, or even obediently see you remove the food, and no longer protect the food, means that it automatically recognizes your boss status.
