Within just a few hours of eating onions, dogs can develop sneezing, runny nose and agitation. Because onions can irritate the dog’s respiratory tract, stomach lining and intestines, which can cause gastroenteritis in severe cases, and can lead to symptoms of poisoning, which can threaten the dog’s life. Onions contain a component called “n-propyl disulfide”, which can cause acute hemolytic anemia in dogs after consumption. Generally, an adult dog weighing 15-25kg will become severely anemic within a week after consuming a whole onion, along with vomiting, diarrhea, palpitations, depression and other symptoms.
