The Akita originated in Japan in the 19th century when the Japanese came together to save and revive one of the seven native dog breeds. In 1918, the Akita Conservation Association was established to maintain the pure Akita bloodline, and in 1931, the Akita was established as the national symbol of Japan. The Akita’s character is inherited from its Spitz bloodline, and the Akita is brave, independent, tough and stubborn. They have a deep affection for their families and are very loyal and protective of their owners. They are reserved with strangers and can be aggressive towards other dogs. They can also be quite dominant. Although this breed is not for everyone, in the right hands, it can be an excellent companion.
