Once the medication is stopped, the dog is no longer scratching his ears with his feet and no worms can be seen on the ear canal examination, then the dog’s ear mites are cured. Ear mites in dogs can be caused by contact with dogs and cats that have ear mites and are infected, and can be treated with ear wash and ear mite medication. Ear mites are highly contagious and must be isolated if there are more than one dog, and an unclean environment can make it difficult to recover from ear mites. Owners who find their dogs scratching their ears frequently, picking open their ears and finding black foreign matter, foul odor, redness, swelling, or even pus infection inside the ears, indicate that the dog may have an ear mite infection and it is recommended to seek immediate medical attention.
