Females usually begin their first heat around ten months of age. They come into heat twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Oestrus usually lasts 11 – 13 days, while some can even last up to 20 days. Males mature more slowly than females, with their first heat occurring about two to three months later than females, about a year after birth. After that, the male dog can come into heat at any time when stimulated by the female dog’s heat. Around the time of estrus, the dog’s private parts will bleed. Owners should pay attention to cleanliness and hygiene, and put diapers on their dogs so that the blood does not get everywhere. You should also wipe your dog with a towel dipped in warm water every night to prevent infection.
