Why do cats open their mouths after smelling smelly feet

Cats tend to open their mouths and give a frightened expression when they smell smelly feet. Instead, they are turning up their upper lip to allow the smell to enter the front of their nostrils to perceive the smell more closely, a behaviour called the “split lip sniffing response”.
