If the anal prolapse is not serious, i.e. within 1cm, wash it with saline immediately, then rub erythromycin ointment on the middle finger and slowly push the anus in. Even if you push it in, it may come out the next time you have a bowel movement, so it is advisable to go to the hospital to find out what the cause of the prolapse is. If the prolapse is severe, i.e. more than 1cm, or if it is accompanied by abrasion, inflammation or pus, you should be taken to a doctor as soon as possible and have it surgically repaired. To prevent re-prolapse, a purse suture can be placed around the anus.
