Oral treatment is not recommended for pancreatitis. For four days after the onset of symptoms, food and water should be abstained and intravenous nutrient solutions should be administered to maintain fitness and prevent stimulation of glandular secretion. Inhibition of glandular secretion can be achieved by subcutaneous injection of atropine injection at 0.04 mg per kg, once in the morning and once in the evening. Atropine is a better inhibitor of glandular secretion, but should not be used for too long because of its toxicity.
