When an older dog in the family starts to fail to understand commands, no longer gets used to regular urination and defecation, exercise decreases significantly, and a formerly active and playful dog becomes lethargic, unwilling to walk, sleeps most of the time, etc., and exhibits many abnormal behaviours, he may have developed Canine Cognitive Disorder (CCD). Canine Cognitive Disorder, commonly known as “Old Dog Syndrome”, is a behavioural disorder of older dogs, similar to the familiar Alzheimer’s disease in humans, which commonly affects older dogs over 12 or 3 years of age. The disease is caused by the gradual death of nerve cells in the brain, resulting in the dog’s cognitive and reactive functions not functioning properly, which in turn affects behaviour, mind, body and quality of life.
