What are the symptoms of hookworm in dogs?

Adult dogs with a small number of hookworm infections show no symptoms. In severe infections in puppies, there is pale mucous membranes, lethargy, a coarse, lustrous coat that sheds easily, reduced appetite, heterophagia, vomiting, digestive disturbances, alternating episodes of dysentery and constipation. The faeces are bloody or black in colour. In severe cases it is tarry and smells foul. Puppies may develop inflammation of the skin, itching, breakouts and erosion of the corners of the mouth until death by severe anaemia and coma.
