Hookworms can infect dogs through healthy skin. In severe infections, sick dogs show a loss of appetite or no food, vomiting, dysentery, and typically discharge faeces that are bloody and black, coffee or tarry in colour. Pale mucous membranes, emaciation, dehydration and electrolyte imbalance can be seen, ranging from gastrointestinal reactions in mild cases to life-threatening in severe cases.
