Before any surgery can be done an anaesthetic is required, and anaesthesia carries certain risks for dogs. The first is the dog’s own condition. If the dog has kidney problems then there are risks when administering anesthetic because it needs to be metabolised by the kidneys and animals with severe kidney disease should not be injected with anesthetic. Some dogs can also develop an allergy to the anesthetic or die of asphyxiation during the anaesthetic.
