Redness and swelling in the urethra of dogs and cats

Redness and swelling of the urethra is a manifestation of inflammatory infections of the genitourinary system, with urethritis being the most common in males. The Urethra is a very good place to start. The urethral orifice is congested or red and swollen with a plasma, mucus or yellowish-white discharge. Urethritis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the urethra, the cause of which is multifaceted, the most fundamental cause being the invasion of the urethra by pathogenic microorganisms. Prolonged indwelling catheters and foreign bodies in the urethra cause pressure and damage to the urethra, leading to local bruising, ischaemia and hypoxia, which reduces the resistance of the urethral mucosa and makes it easy for infection to develop.
