It is normal for a bitch to pull her placenta off when giving birth to a puppy. If a bitch has pulled the placenta off during the birth of a puppy, the owner needs to help the dog if she has not chewed the umbilical cord attached to the placenta, as failure to break the cord in time can put the puppy’s life at risk. Under artificially assisted conditions, the dog is usually plucked out of the amniotic membrane and the umbilical cord attached to the placenta is then cut after the dog has come out with the placenta.
