A dog that is panting rapidly while sleeping may have some cardiovascular disease or abnormalities of the lungs or trachea. If the dog also has a purple, cyanotic tongue or mucous membranes, it is advisable to take the dog to the hospital promptly. It may also be necessary to give the dog oxygen to relieve the panting first and then examine the dog once the symptoms have subsided. If the dog is very prone to this condition, some chronic illness is the main consideration. If the dog develops this condition suddenly, it may be due to an acute lesion such as pulmonary oedema or emphysema.
