Depending on the depth of the burns in cats, they are generally classified as first degree burns, second degree burns and third degree burns. With first-degree burns, the skin will appear red, swollen, hot and sore, but will usually heal on its own. With second-degree burns, the skin is damaged and blood blisters and infection are evident. For third degree burns, the skin will be extensively necrotic, blackened and hardened, with a large purulent discharge at a later stage.
