Male cats need to fast from food and water for eight hours and six hours before de-sexing. This is to reduce the contents of the stomach during the de-sexing operation and to reduce vomiting during and after the anaesthetic. The de-sexing surgery for male cats requires general anaesthesia and cats may vomit during anaesthesia, and the possibility of vomiting is even greater if they do not fast from food and water before surgery. This is because the cat’s gastrointestinal function has not fully recovered and may cause vomiting after eating.
