The coat of the Old Shepherd is rich and luxuriant, and during its formative years it will shed, just like any other dog, but there are physiological and pathological causes of hair loss. Physiological shedding is the process of shedding and moulting in large numbers during the changing season. This happens about twice a year. Normally shedding is rare. Pathological refers to the shedding of hair caused by parasites, skin diseases, or nutritional imbalances.
