Clinical signs of hypoglycaemia can occur when blood glucose levels fall below 46mg/dL. In puppies, it is commonly caused by starvation, idiopathic hypoglycaemia, congenital portal short-circuiting or septicaemia. In young dogs it is often caused by hepatobiliary disease, portal short-circuiting, hyperalgesia or sepsis. Older dogs are commonly caused by tumours, hepatobiliary disease, hypoadrenocorticism and sepsis. Convulsions, weakness, shock, hypothermia, ataxia and even coma are common.
