Early signs of distemper are mainly respiratory and digestive symptoms, but later the virus destroys the dog’s central nervous system, leading to neurological symptoms. The neurological signs of distemper range from localised twitching of the lips and eyelids to salivation, empty chewing or spinning, rushing and sometimes foaming at the mouth, clenching of the teeth, falling to the ground and seizures of epileptic proportions, lasting from a few seconds to several minutes and often progressing from several to dozens of episodes per day. For dogs that have developed neurological symptoms, some valium treatment is recommended, along with symptomatic and supportive treatment. Euthanasia may also be considered when the condition is very severe, such as when it severely affects the dog’s daily life and the quality of survival is extremely low.
