Rabies is an infectious disease of animal origin caused by infection with the rabies virus and can be transmitted in mammals such as dogs and cats as well as humans. Whether a domestic cat will get rabies at home depends on whether it comes into contact with outside mammals such as cats and dogs. If the cat has been kept in captivity and has no contact with outside mammals, there is no source of infection or means of transmission, it will generally not get rabies. However, if a domestic cat has a history of contact with outside mammals, there is a risk of rabies infection.
