Samoan is a short form of Samoyed, so both names refer to the Samoyed sled dog from Russia. The Samoyed was first bred by the Siberian Samoyed nation and was primarily used to pull sleds and manage reindeer, hence the name Samoyed. The most common Samoyed is usually pure white, with a very few with cheese-colored hair, friendly and docile, often called the “smiling angel” because of the upturned corners of his mouth. The Samoyed’s erect ears are thick, triangular in shape, and slightly rounded at the tips. The two ears are more separated. The eyes are dark in color, sunken, widely spaced, almond-shaped, with the lower eyelids sloping toward the base of the ears. The nose is black, brown, or liver brown in color, and the color of the nose sometimes changes with age and climate. The lips are mostly black with upturned corners of the mouth. The tail coat is long and thick, and when the dog is on alert, the tail is upturned above the back or on the side of the back, and drops when at rest.
