If a dog has just had surgery or an injury, it is normal for it to be reluctant to drink water for a period of time. A change in food from dry to wet is another potential reason for a pet dog to drink less water, as it gets more water from its food. Illness can also be a cause. If a dog is acting unusually lethargic and seems sore or uncomfortable, he should be taken to the vet. If there are no such symptoms, it may be related to psychological rather than physical causes. Sometimes, changes in the surroundings can cause anxiety for the animal. Some dogs adapt quickly to their new residence, but others will act nervous or upset. If this is the case, the pet will usually calm down after a day or two and start drinking water. Changes in the home’s environment can also cause problems. For example, familiar family members leave for an extended period of time. The animal will often refuse to eat or drink because it is lonely or upset. Again, after a day or two of calm, it will usually begin to adapt to the new change. Many dogs will refuse to drink in unfamiliar environments because the water smells different than before. Dogs are sensitive to odors and notice very small differences. If a dog won’t drink tap water, it may be a good idea to try giving it bottled water. Examine each possible reason when a dog does not drink water and then try to figure out a solution.
