A dog’s nose is a very sensitive organ, and a keen sense of smell allows them to perform many special tasks. But once they suffer from rhinitis, it will not only affect the work of some working dogs, even for the normal life of domestic dogs, it can also cause a lot of trouble. The main reason for this is the change of seasons or the sudden drop in temperature which makes the nasal mucosa cold or because of the inhalation of harmful gases, or overly stimulating gases that stimulate the disease. 1. External substances caused by inhalation of ammonia and chlorine, smoke and dust, pollen, insects and other direct stimulation to the nasal mucosa, which leads to the occurrence of rhinitis. 3. Own causes secondary to distemper, influenza, bronchitis, nasal mites, pharyngitis, paranasal sinusitis and other infectious diseases. Diagnosis 1. Acute rhinitis: When the disease first develops, the dog’s nasal mucosa will appear flushed and swollen, sneezing frequently, and often shaking his head or scratching his nose with his front paws, while one or both nostrils runny, at first transparent and plasma-like, then turning into plasma-mucus or mucopurulent nasal mucus, drying to form a dry crust around the nostrils. When the disease worsens, the swelling of the nasal mucosa becomes obvious, causing the nasal cavity to become narrow, resulting in difficulty in breathing and the sound of nasal congestion. In cases of conjunctivitis, the eyes may become watery. When the disease is accompanied by pharyngitis, there is difficulty in swallowing, often accompanied by coughing and swollen lymph nodes in the jaw. 2. Chronic rhinitis: the onset of the disease continues slowly, the runny nose is sometimes more and sometimes less, mostly mucopurulent. If the inflammation is not treated in time, it may cause bone necrosis as well as tissue disintegration, so the nasal discharge may be mixed with blood and accompanied by a foul smell. The cause of asphyxia or encephalopathy is mostly chronic rhinitis, and this phenomenon must be taken seriously.3. Fungal rhinitis: male dogs are more likely to be infected with rhinitis, and may have mucopurulent or bloody discharge, and some may have sneezing symptoms, and the dog’s face or nostrils are hypopigmented, and there will be symptoms of hair loss. According to the symptoms of nasal cavity, if you find the nasal mucosa flushed and swollen, runny nose, sneezing and scratching the nose, you need to confirm the diagnosis immediately. The first step in treating rhinitis in dogs is to determine what causes it, then put the dog in a warm place, temporarily stop training the dog and let the dog rest. 2. Acute rhinitis, which is usually mild, can be cured by itself without medication. For serious rhinitis, you can choose the following drugs to rinse your dog’s nasal cavity: 1% saline, 2 to 3% boric acid solution, 1% sodium bicarbonate solution, 0.1% potassium permanganate solution. Note: When rinsing the nasal cavity, the dog’s head must be lowered downward, and after rinsing, then put anti-inflammatory drops into the nostrils. 3. To induce vasoconstriction as well as reduce sensitivity, 0.1% epinephrine or benzyl salicylate (Salo) paraffin oil (1:10) drops can be used into the nostrils, as can drops of nasal net. Prevention 1. in the winter to pay attention to the dog’s warm work, to avoid a large temperature difference at once into the environment, usually also let the dog as far as possible from some irritating gas. 2. if the air is more pollutants, foggy days when it is best not to take the dog out, dirty air is easy to cause respiratory disease and rhinitis in dogs. Pay attention to the usual to observe the state of the dog, found abnormalities should be timely to the hospital for examination.
