Dogs that have not received memory enhancement training can only maintain a short memory of 5 to 8 minutes. But dogs also have a unique way of remembering. Impression memory refers to a dog’s memory of things it normally comes into contact with. These memories come from sight, sound, smell, touch, and even taste, and can last for about two weeks. Dogs store their memories of things they normally come into contact with in their brains so that they can more fully recall the process when needed. Motor memory, also known as neural memory, refers to the movements that dogs do during their normal training or play, and the process of movement is stored in the mind. This memory is somewhat similar to muscle memory, and therefore tends to be more lasting than impression memory, lasting more than 2 weeks. Emotional memory is the memory of the content of the emotion generated, and dogs happen to have this unique way of memory. Compared to other animals, dogs are more emotional and have a deeper emotional memory. This memory can last for months or even years, which is why dogs are more “vindictive”.
