Common mammary diseases in cats include mastitis, mammary tumors, etc. Pooper scoopers should take appropriate diagnostic and treatment measures according to the specific condition of the disease. Mastitis is a more common disease in cats after whelping, and is an inflammation of single or multiple nipples, which can be divided into acute and chronic, and is often accompanied by abscesses. The cause of the disease is also caused by injury to the nipples and thus infection. The cause of mastitis: Acute mastitis is usually seen in kittens that have bitten or broken the nipple. It is then caused by septic bacteria such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli or Corynebacterium. The chronic mastitis is the result of untimely or improper treatment of acute mastitis, which is the result of atresia of the milk ducts, retention of milk and stimulation of the mammary glands. At the beginning of the disease, the milk is thin, and in the later stages, the milk is mostly pus-like and contains yellow flocculent or blood. In severe cases, the systemic symptoms are obvious, with depression, elevated body temperature, loss of appetite, and often lying down. In chronic mastitis, the systemic symptoms are not obvious, the diseased breast becomes hard, less milk or no milk, and finally the breast atrophies. Treatment 1. 60,000 units/kg body weight of penicillin and 50,000 units/kg body weight of streptomycin can be used for intramuscular injection, 2 times/day, for 5-7 days. Broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy is also available, such as gentamicin, kanamycin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, etc. 2. Those with systemic symptoms can be given sugar, alkaline and fluid supplements. For acute inflammation of mastitis can be used ice bags for cold compresses; chronic inflammation of mastitis can be used 25% magnesium sulfate solution for hot compresses with towels. Infrared light or IDP (specific electromagnetic wave therapy device) can also be used to irradiate the affected area.3. Circumferential closure can be made at the base of the breast, 1-2 times a day, along with systemic antibacterial and anti-inflammatory treatment.4. For cases with heavy mastopexy, mastectomy and ovarian removal can be performed. Etiology of mammary gland tumor: it may be closely related to progesterone or progesterone-like drugs, and a few may be related to estrogen. Symptoms Cat mammary tumors may generally appear as hard, nodular masses near the breasts, adhering to the skin, generally symmetrical or multi-mammary distribution, the breasts may also appear red and swollen, in the early stage if the owner does not notice, the cat’s mental state may not be abnormal, in the later stage the cat’s breasts may ulcerate and flow pus, and may also spread to other parts of the body, leading to aggravation. Treatment Local recurrence after conservative surgical excision is common. The currently recommended surgical excision method is unilateral radical mastectomy, which can be used to treat mammary tumors diagnosed on one side. Adjuvant chemotherapy: Adriamycin alone (25 mg/m^2IV, given slowly over 15 min on day 1) or followed by cyclophosphamide (50 mg/m^2PO on days 3, 4, 5 and 6) can be administered every 3 weeks for 8 consecutive treatments for cats with metastatic tumors or difficult to remove tumors; this regimen significantly prolongs survival. 50% of cats will see complete or partial response. It is most important to pay attention to de-sexing cats at the right time and to keep an eye on them for timely detection and treatment.
