If the dog does not have any abnormalities, the owner should not worry too much. Owners are advised to open the dog’s mouth and use a torch to check for fish spikes in the throat and remove them with flat forceps if they are useful. If the dog shows signs of dry heaving or constant discomfort, the fish spike may be stuck in the oesophagus or stomach, in which case the owner is advised to take the dog to hospital for treatment. It is usually best to pick out the fish spines when giving your dog fish to avoid getting them stuck or cutting into the intestines.
