Distemper virus is one of the three major infectious diseases in dogs. It is characterised by cold symptoms such as purulent facial rhinitis and eye discharge, with possible neurological symptoms at a later stage and a high mortality rate and long duration of illness. If the dog is able to eat on its own, anti-viral pellets and resistance-building medication and anti-inflammatory drugs can be added to the daily diet. However, if the dog is anorexic, the treatment must be based on antiviral and supportive therapy with fluids to replenish the dog’s dehydration and adjust the body’s ionic acidity.
