It is not advisable to give human medication, but if not, baby mum’s milk will do. The symptoms of most gastroenteritis in dogs include decreased mental state, decreased appetite or even elimination, vomiting and diarrhoea, and depending on the cause, different medications are usually given to the dog. Most gastroenteritis requires anti-inflammatory medication, such as penicillin or cephalosporins. Gastrointestinal mucosa repair and acid inhibition can be treated with pump inhibitors or H2 receptor blockers. In cases of decreased gastrointestinal motility or intestinal obstruction, drugs to promote gastrointestinal motility are also usually needed. For diarrhoea, antidiarrhoeal medication is usually required. If the diarrhoea is caused by a virus, additional antiviral medication is also required. Parasitic gastroenteritis usually requires deworming, and foreign body gastroenteritis usually requires surgery.
