The main purpose of the tail is to maintain balance when running, to protect the rear and also to socialise. Cats are able to climb high up trees and jump from heights without falling to their death thanks to the tail’s ability to puff up the air, creating a cushion, slowing the fall and keeping the body head up and feet down, which means that the cat’s tail has a balancing effect on the body.
