Seborrheic dermatitis in cats

Feline seborrhoeic dermatitis is caused by disorders of skin lipid metabolism and is divided into primary and secondary. Primary dermatitis in cats is classified as dry, wet or dermatitis depending on the symptoms. The dry type is characterised by dry skin, with a large amount of grey or silvery scales in the coat and light hair loss; the wet type is characterised by a large amount of oil in the skin and coat of the tail root where the sebaceous glands are well developed or with a yellowish-brown grease block adhering to it; the dermatitis type is characterised by itching, erythema, scaling and severe hair loss, with obvious scabs forming. Secondly, secondary seborrhoeic dermatitis is not confined to the skin where the sebaceous glands are well developed, but can even occur where the primary lesion is damaging to the skin.
