The Lumberjack Mastiff is highly excitable, learns things quickly and is very easy to train. It is best to choose a Lumberjack around 3-4 months of age, a period when the dog has not formed bad habits, is adaptable, can quickly settle into a new environment and has a high survival rate. The first thing to do is to get the Lumberjack Mastiff to recognise their owner and be nice to the dog in general, they are very intelligent and can sense how their owner treats them. If the dog does well in training, you can pet them and reward them with treats, if they do not do well reprimand them loudly, so that the dog understands that what it is doing is not right. Don’t hit them, they can become rebellious or fearful. The Lumberjack Mastiff is friendly to his family, likes to play with children and is patient with them. However, they are wary of strangers, have a strong sense of territory and will bark loudly and attack if violated, making them ideal as guard dogs. Do not feed the Lumberjack Mastiff milk during feeding, dogs are lactose intolerant and will suffer from diarrhoea and bloating if they drink too much milk. Don’t feed them human food either, too much salt will cause a lot of hair loss and damage to the dog’s organs.
