For persistent asthma, oxygenation and rapid bronchodilation are required to prevent prolonged hypoxia resulting in multi-organ failure, and rapid-acting corticosteroids and aminophylline can be used for bronchodilation. In addition, correction of water, electrolyte and acid-base balance is required. Long-term control of asthma is recommended, with nebulisation with steroids and bronchodilators, and avoidance of irritants.
