Rabies is a fatal infection that occurs after being bitten by a dog with rabies. Dog owners are advised to have their dogs vaccinated regularly. For yourself, in the unlikely event of a dog bite, first treat the wound locally as soon as possible, either with soapy water or water, squeezing out as much blood as possible and applying iodine after cleaning, taking care not to bandage it. Since it is not known whether the dog is rabid or not, it is advisable to go immediately to an immunisation department, i.e. a community health centre, for a rabies vaccination. The medical staff at the vaccination department will administer the standard rabies vaccination on a case-by-case basis, and if the patient has been vaccinated before, he or she may only need two doses of rabies vaccine. In addition to the rabies vaccine, there is a medication called anti-rabies immunoglobulin, which is given half topically and half intramuscularly when treating wounds. In the event of a dog bite, the above treatment is very important, as none of the people who suffer from rabies have survived the disease so far, and the death rate is very high, at 100%. It is very important that the main prevention and control measure for rabies is to get vaccinated immediately after a dog bite.
