Heartworm is a blood parasite that can infect dogs of any age and has been found in cats. Heartworms are usually found in the right heart and pulmonary artery of dogs and cats. As the worms live in the heart, they can become a health hazard. Initially there is no discomfort, but later there is a gradual onset of exercise intolerance, coughing and rapid breathing. The disease needs to be diagnosed by blood smears and tests.
