Finch Virus Symptoms

(1) Enteritis type: the incubation period of natural infection is 4-14 days, with initial manifestations of fever (above 40 degrees Celsius), depression, inappetence and vomiting. The initial vomit is food, mucus-like, yellowish-green or with blood. Diarrhoea begins around one day after the onset of the disease. The faeces are dilute at the beginning of the illness, but as the illness progresses, they become coffee-coloured or ketchup-coloured and bloody. Later, the frequency increases, the urgency increases, and the bloody stools have a peculiar fishy smell. After a few hours of bloody stools the dog shows signs of severe dehydration, with sunken eyes, a dry nose, a high degree of loss of skin elasticity and significant weight loss. In cases of severe intestinal haemorrhage, endotoxic poisoning and diffuse intravascular coagulation can result from the decay of the intestinal contents, causing death by shock and coma. The blood phase changes and the white blood cell count in sick dogs can be as low as 0. The majority of dogs die at this time, and gradually improve if the rod neutrophil count gradually rises. (2) Myocarditis type: Mostly seen in puppies under eight weeks of age, often with sudden onset and death within a few hours.
